BackTrader Alternative

Flat $15/mo. Unlimited accounts. A self-hosted option BackTrader does not offer. The BackTrader alternative for futures prop firm traders who do not want to pay more as they scale.

BackTrader at backtrader.io is a cloud-based futures trade copier published by BackTrader LLC. It is worth saying plainly that it is not the open-source Python backtesting library of the same name at backtrader.com, because the two are constantly confused. It is also a legitimate product: cloud-native, server-side, with limit and stop propagation and a well-reviewed iOS app. If you are comparing it against Signal Trade App, you are choosing between two working copiers rather than a good one and a bad one.

The reason traders start looking for an alternative is the pricing model. BackTrader charges by capacity: Standard is $35/month for 10 accounts per connection across 2 broker connections, and Premium is $50/month for 20 per connection across 5. That ceiling tends to bind sooner than traders expect, because each additional prop firm usually means another connection rather than another account on an existing one. Signal Trade App charges a flat $15/month after a $30 first month, or $199 a year, with no account cap on any plan. Connect 5 accounts or 50 for the same price. (BackTrader also lists a $100/month Pro tier, but their own pages gave conflicting connection caps for it when we checked on 14 September 2026 — one said unlimited, another said 100 — so confirm that number with them before subscribing to Pro.)

Over three years the entry tiers work out to roughly $555 on Signal Trade App against roughly $1,260 on BackTrader Standard. The self-hosted licence changes the shape of that comparison entirely: $599 once, then nothing.

Self-hosting is the one thing BackTrader does not offer at any price, and that follows directly from their own positioning — no downloads and no VPS is a selling point in their marketing. For traders who want data sovereignty, or who would rather own the software than rent it forever, Signal Trade App ships as a $599 one-time self-hosted deployment with full source code, Docker Compose setup and lifetime updates, running on your own server. Break-even against BackTrader Standard is about 17 months.

On broker coverage the two are close, and we are not going to invent a gap. Both name Tradovate, Rithmic, NinjaTrader and TradingView (BackTrader also lists ProjectX, which Signal Trade App does not connect to), and both cover major prop firms — BackTrader explicitly names Topstep, Apex Trader Funding, Tradeify, MyFundedFutures, Lucid Trading and Alpha Futures. What we can confirm about Signal Trade App and could not verify about BackTrader is mixed-broker copy groups: running a NinjaTrader leader that copies to Tradovate and Rithmic followers inside a single group. Their public pages do not address it either way, so ask them if it matters to you.

Mobile is a genuine difference in approach. BackTrader built a native iOS app, and traders rate its fill notifications highly; we found no Android release. Signal Trade App is a fully responsive web app, so it runs on any iPhone, Android phone or tablet with no install — and because it is the same application rather than a companion, it includes order entry. You can open a position, move a stop, flatten an account or pause entries from your phone, not just watch alerts arrive.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is BackTrader (backtrader.io)?

BackTrader is a cloud-based futures trade copier published by BackTrader LLC, with journaling, analytics and a native iOS app. It is not the open-source Python backtrader backtesting library at backtrader.com — the two are unrelated products that happen to share a name.

Why look for a BackTrader alternative?

Almost always the pricing model. BackTrader charges by capacity — $35/month for 10 accounts per connection across 2 broker connections, $50/month for 20 per connection across 5 — so adding prop firms, which consume connections, moves you up a tier. Signal Trade App is a flat $15/month with unlimited accounts, so scaling does not change your bill.

How does Signal Trade App pricing compare to BackTrader?

Signal Trade App is $30 for the first month, then $15/month, or $199 a year, with unlimited accounts. BackTrader lists $35, $50 and $100 per month tiers with 20% off yearly billing. Over three years that is about $555 against about $1,260 on the entry tiers.

Does BackTrader offer self-hosting?

No. BackTrader is cloud-only and markets that as a feature — no downloads, no VPS — so there is no self-hosted deployment at any tier. Signal Trade App offers a $599 one-time self-hosted licence with full source code, Docker Compose deployment and lifetime updates.

Can I migrate from BackTrader to Signal Trade App?

Yes, and running both in parallel first is the sensible approach. Create a Signal Trade App account, connect the same broker accounts, rebuild your copy groups and compare fills on demo accounts before cancelling anything. No data migration is required and the two do not interfere with each other.

Do both support the same brokers?

Broadly yes. Both name Tradovate, Rithmic, NinjaTrader and TradingView; BackTrader also lists ProjectX, which Signal Trade App does not connect to. Broker coverage is not the deciding factor between these two — pricing model and self-hosting are.

Is there a free trial?

Signal Trade App offers a 5-day free trial with every feature unlocked. It requires a card and you are not charged during the trial. BackTrader shows a Try for Free button on its pricing page, but the length and terms are not published on any page readable without an account.
